Agate is a type of chalcedony belonging to the microcrystalline quartz group. Its main component is silicon dioxide (chemical formula: SiO2). This gemstone has high porosity but remains very solid, as its hardness is between 6.5 and 7 on the Mohs scale. Agate forms in rocky, volcanic cavities through a long process of silica layer deposits, thus creating patterns in the form of streaks, bands, circles, or nodules... Agate deposits are mainly found in Brazil, Madagascar, USA, Australia, China...
